FlashChat 4.8.0 (beta) is here!

In 4.8.0, we have added a significant new feature: chat caching. With caching, your server load will be substantially reduced. And with the new "full caching" option, you can use FlashChat in the default installation (not integrated with a CMS or bulletin board) without any database at all!

At the second step of installation, you will be prompted to determine whether to use FlashChat in the default mode, or with "partial caching" or "full caching". Here's what they mean:

Partial caching: database access is only made "on demand". You can use all of the normal FlashChat features, but a connection to the database is only created when needed. Features like CMS integration, bots, user profiles, socket server, and all other features of FlashChat are still usable in this mode.

Full caching: No database is used at all. In other words, the chat messages, room list, and user list are all stored in plain text files. Although this increases the number of file read/writes dramatically, and in some cases can slow down the chat, the overall server load is significantly reduced since a good chunk of server resources goes into database connections and accesses.

In /inc/config.php, you will find a new option:

'cacheType' => X,

X can be 0, 1, or 2, for no caching, limited caching, or full caching. If you are using a shared web server with FlashChat in the default mode of operation (users are not required to register or integrate with a CMS system), and you do not need the bot system, I suggest that you try full caching. Your server admin will probably thank you for it. :)

The bot installer was updated with a small fix that will allow it to work on servers where the PHP open_basedir restriction is in effect. This update only applies to users who were previously unable to get the bot system installed due to this restriction.

An important security update has been made to FlashChat. Please download and install FlashChat 4.7.0 as soon as possible to avoid known security exploits.

Also in this update...

- The Java socket server has been released! This has been bundled into FlashChat, which means that it's free for all current FlashChat users. Thus, FlashChat now offers both a PHP-only socket server, as well as a Java socket server. The Java socket server should be more robust, however, and is recommended if you have a dedicated server with Java support. Please refer to the .txt file in your FlashChat download for instructions on the Java socket server configuration and setup.

- Javascript code to get around the "Click or press space bar to activate this control..." message in Internet Explorer has been added. This message appears when using recent versions of IE. Special thanks to Ricky Huckle for this contribution.

- Live Support mode has been updated so that moderators may act as support agents. Special thanks to Gene Wells for this contribution.

- A minor fix to the bot loader of the install wizard was made.

- An update to the phpBB integration file has been made, which uses phpBB's ranking system to determine moderator status. Special thanks to Gene Wells for this contribution.

- By default, file sharing has been turned *off* in this version, but it can be re-enabled by editing the layout files in /chat/inc/layouts/. This has been done to address potential security concerns with the file-sharing feature.

- Fix for the bug that was causing the "User XX has entered" message to appear multiple times on new use login has been fixed (this was appearing in all 4.6.x versions of FlashChat).

To upgrade your current FlashChat, upload all files to your server, replacing the existing files, then re-run the installer, choosing the "upgrade" option at step 2.

Coming in October 2006... at long last, an Ajax/HTML version of FlashChat should be available, as well as a Java applet version. Stay tuned!

FlashChat 4.5.6 has been released with the following two minor fixes:

If you already have 4.5.5 running and it works well, there is no need to upgrade to 4.5.6, unless you are having installation problems with PHP 5 or you are using MyBB.

FlashChat 4.5.0 beta is now available!

In this release...

- Ability to view a user's photo while engaging in private chat conversations. All CMS classes have been updated with a "getPhoto($userid)" function, although this still has to be implemented for most CMS integration files
- Button to remove custom background images
- Ability to load multiple modules simultaneously
- All known issues from the forum have been addressed
- User information is now cached in PHP sessions (information about user role, gender, etc.) to reduce DB calls
- Minor update to CPG-Nuke integration file

FlashChat 4.4.0 is now available from the TUFaT.com download area. In this new beta version...

- New "Moderator" permissions level added for some CMS systems, including SMF, XMB, and phpBB. More are being added weekly.

- Permissions can now be set for the admin panel for Moderators. Thus, you can give your moderators selective access to specific tools.

- Fixed a minor bug with password encoding in user.php (admin section)

- New "mods" option in config.php allows you to disable specific IRC commands for moderators.

- Added Croatian language (hr.php)

- Added vBulletin 3.5 integration, aeDating 4 integration, and Joomla integration. Special thanks to Paul Marsden for his vBulletin 3.5 integration.

- Updated socket server documentation. Now works well with EasyPHP.

- New smilie layout option: "toolbar", which can assume values of 0, 1, or 2. You can find this in the /inc/layouts/ files.

- Fix for /whowas bug.

- "maxMessageSize" config value has now been enabled for private messaging windows.

- changed "msgRemoveAfter" default value in config.php to 24 hours.

- A few minor bugs which were reported in the forum are also fixed, like the "Call to member function on a non-object in chat/admin/usrlist.php on line 38" error, and the "smarty variables not set on room.php" error.

- Stevo's fix for the Admin panel (from the forum) has been applied.

- 4.4.0 works well with the Audio / Video module, which comes with the FlashChat Module Pack (requires Flash Communication Server).

Small bug in 4.4.0 fixed... administrators were unable to access the admin tools listed in "modsAdminRestrictions" (config.php file). Only files in /inc/cmses/ have been updated.

Version 4.3.3 has now been released. In this version, only one minor bug was fixed: 4.3.2 did not correctly load external modules. Thus, you only need this update if you were previously unable to load the external modules.

4.3.2 released with the following 2 fixes:

- Bug in the "active when <X users are present" feature (for bots)... the bot was going away, but then re-appearing after a few seconds.

- Bug when the theme tab is disabled, and a user changes any PHP options for sound or text - upon this change the sharedObject File was rewritten without information about the selected skin, causing it to be corrupted.

FlashChat 4.3.0 is now available for download.

In this version, you now have the ability to teach your bot new phrases. You can read more about this feature in the online documentation:

This is done using two new IRC-like commands, available only to moderators: /teach and /unteach

Also in this update:

- Improvements to the Live Support feature of FlashChat. Now, it works with so-called DefaultCMS mode (whereby users must register before login). Also, when a user in a room has submitted a message, but the moderator is in another room, the room blinks to notify the moderator of the pending message.

- Some bug fixes to the socket server feature so that it will work on more flavors of Linux.

More noticable changes:

- moved admin files to "admin" dir (admin.php is no more!)
- for banner added option 'stretch' => true/false;
- file sharing: user can now send files to users in other rooms
- Intelligent scrollbars (scrolling only enabled when necessary)
- input text box scrollbar (when needed)
- option to disable any IRC command (see config.php)... for example, you can disable /back and /backtime now
- a few .swf files are now used for backgrounds to help optimize the chat. I'm using some .jpg images still because I haven't been able to find suitable .swf designs for all themes, and also to illustrate to users that it's possible to use either non-progressive JPGs or SWFs. Please note that for the BEST performance, it's better to use SWF backgrounds.
