Messaging in osDate 2.x
osDate 2.x has two new messaging features: the php121 instant messenger, and a simple "shoutbox" which lets your users send "shout outs" to anyone who wishes to hear them (shout outs are NOT one-on-one messaging). If you wish to have more advanced chatting capabilities, you should consider FlashChat.
IMPORTANT: Messaging of any kind usually GREATLY increases your server load! If you are on a "shared" web hosting service rather than a dedicated server, this is probably not the solution for you.
There are two steps to enable either the php121 instant messenger, or the shoutbox. To enable these features, open your Global Settings admin page, and change the options shown below from "N" to "Y".

Then, ensure the members of the appropriate membership levels can access the newly-enabled tools, by checkin the "Allow instant messaging" and "Allow php121 instant messenger". You may wish to only allow these options for members with a higher membership level, for example.

When the shoutbox is enabled, a new panel will appear (by default below the "Site Statistics"). Shoutbox messages are small, iframe-embedded messages that are not saved in long term storage.

The php121 instant messenger allows one-on-one, instant private messging. Read more about php121.
