Creating Logins

Return to the Index

When you started TUFaT for the first time after installation, you encountered the screen show below, whereby you were able to create multiple levels of login for your family tree.

Here's what the various parts of this screen mean...

User ID: This is what all users of your family tree will use as the "Tree Name" or "Login ID" or "User ID" or "Username" (those terms are used interchangeably in TUFaT), regardless of which password they are using.

General Use Password: This is likely what you would give to your trusted family members, to edit and add to your family tree. They will use the User ID + this password to login in an editable mode.

Read-Only Password: This is likely what you would give to your friends, to view your tree, but not edit the tree. This is a slightly more secure mode of login, to ensure that viewers cannot modify your tree.

Administrative Password: This is what you should keep private, or give only to those who should have full administrative control over your family tree - including the ability to delete the tree completely!

Descriptive Tree Name: This is used as the title of your tree when viewing all available family trees in the system, so that you can easily distinguish your family tree from others that have been created by other users.

Admin E-mail Address: This is YOUR email address (please do not use "g8z@yahoo.com", since that's my email, not yours).

Allow Cross-tree Searches: It is recommended that you UN-CHECK this box unless you wish to allow owners of other family trees to search your tree for possible matches. This is useful if you live in a community whereby many other families are likely to share relatives with you. If you intend to keep your tree private, you should un-check this option.

Guidelines: You must read and consent to the TUFaT guidelines before creating your family tree.

The various logins will display different options in the left-side menu that the user sees after logging in to TUFaT:

Master Login
General Login
Admin Login
Read-Only Login (and view of sample page in this mode)

If you login as an administrator, you can change any of these logins using the "Edit User Info" option. Please note that these logins are NOT encrypted in your database, so anyone with access to your MySQL database, or phpMyAdmin, will be able to easily view these passwords. Thus, please do not use any too-sensitive passwords.

If you login using the system's "master password", you can also create NEW logins, and choose the level of access, for any existing family tree. Clicking on the "Add New Login" option in the "Administration" section will yield this option. If you choose "Edit Individual ID" from the "Login Type" combo box, then the new login will provide access ONLY to that specific record in the chosen family tree. Thus, this is a way to restrict edit access to a single record.

Later versions of TUFaT will likely give this power (to assign individual logins) to regular admins, instead of only master (super-user) admins. The ability to edit/view/delete the logins that have been added via this interface will also be soon added to TUFaT.
